Task 01 & 03 : Portofolio & Design Construction

Week 06 - Week 09

A. MIND MAPPING / RESEARCH

1. Unconventional Wearable Art

For this final project, we have been assigned to use uncoventional materials to make our own collection. Unconventional means not conforming to accepted rules or standards. Unconventional also means being out of the ordinary. While wearable art, also known as artwear or “art to wear”, refers to art pieces in the shape of clothing or jewellery pieces. These pieces are usually handmade, and are produced only once or as a very limited series. Mostly made from fibrous materials.

Wearable arts comes in various forms, such as sculptural, leather, weaving, and sewing. The unconventional materials that i used is tin can pull tabs and paperclips. Pull tabs are usually thrown away and unuseful. But if we think out of the box, pull tabs can be used as a material to create beautiful patterns especially in fashion.

Medieval means “the Middle Ages” which is between the Roman empire and the Renaissance. While armour itself means a protective clothing with ability to deflect or absorb the impact of projectiles or other weapons.

During the Middle Ages, knights wore heavy armor made of metal. There were two main kinds of armor: chain mail and plate armor. By the 1400s most knights were wearing full plate armor. This armor offered better protection, but it was less flexible and heavier than chain mail. A full set of plate armor weighed around 60 pounds.

Medieval armour is made of metals that has been processed and formed into a beautiful pattern. It has a lot types of pattern, which is some of them are mail and scale armour. Armor materials have almost the same characteristics as the tin can pull tabs, which is made of metal. Lots of pull tabs that are arranged can form a pattern that is almost similar as the armour.

Below shown the mindmap of my research on my subject matter.

B. RESEARCH ON SUBJECT MATTER INSPIRATION

My subject matter is medieval armor. I was inspired by the metal materials that are used to make the armor. It is known that as early as the 11th century B.C., Chinese warriors wore armour made of rhinoceros skin. As technology advanced, so did weapony and defenses. From a soft outer garment to the knight’s full metal suit. The armor of knights also changed over the course of time. Initially, knights wore a helmet of quitted fabric covered with leather that may have been covered with mail. This stronger helmet with more protection can protect the skull and face. Plate armor was added to protect the vital organs and to cover areas less vulnerable by a lack of mail and protect the joints.

The first metal armor consisted of overlapping bronze plates sewn onto a protective garment. This type of armor eventually evolved into chain mail as stronger metals were discovered. Yet, the soft armor was not totally abandoned. Padded undergarments continued to be worn to help absorb some of the shock from blows to the body.

The evolution of Armor

Armor are known to be worn by male or knights. It is not a common thing for women to wear armor. But actually, women can also wear armor even only for fashion purpose. The medieval armor inspired me to make a women collection using materials that are similar to armor, which is tin can pull tabs and paperclips. We usually see metal as a masculine and bold material. That is why people thinks that armor can only be worn by men. While in fact, there is no limit for someone to wear something, especially in the fashion industry. The idea of making a dress using metal materials can describe how women also can wear something bold.

C. MOOD BOARD

1. Fashion Editorial Images
Fashion editorial images are a set of photographs based on a particular theme, usually published in a fashion magazine. These are some images that i collected from pinterest for the fashion editorial images that are related to my subject matter.

2. Subject Matter Images
My subject matter is Medieval Armour.

3. Color Research
As i am doing a winter collection, I choose a cool and neutral color which is black and silver from the metal color.

4. Designer Inspiration
For this collection, I was inspired by the Versace gown that Zendaya wore at Met Gala 2018. This gown features an armored neck and shoulder piece, sparkling chainmail, spiked belt, and modest train which relates to the Medieval Armor.

5. Texture Sample
To make the pattern look like the armor, i planned to use the gathering and sewing technique. I choose one image to show the pull tabs pattern.

6. Typography
After collecting fashion editorial images, subject matter images, color research, designer inspiration, and texture sample, i gathered the images to create the mood board. I named this winter collection as “touch of Arcene”.

D. CONCEPTUAL STORY NARRATIVE

For this final project, i chose medieval armour as my subject matter. Medieval armor is a protective clothing used by knights in the medieval era. Armor is usually made of iron/metal which is very strong to protect the body parts of the knights from weapons of war. Because of its strong and masculine characteristics, people often associate armor with the male gender. However, women are also living beings who are strong and equal to men. Not only men can wear armor, but women also can wear them.

For this project, I used metal materials, which are tin lids and paperclips to describe the armor, and made women's clothing from this materials. My collection for this project depicts strong and boldness where not many of these characteristics are recognized in women. The silver color of the tin lid also adds an elegant impression to the dress I made. When everyone look at my collection, i want them to see boldness and elegance in women. That is why i use metal materials as the texture and black satin silk as the base fabric of the dress. I also inspired by Zendaya in her Versace dress for Met Gala 2018. She wore a beautiful and elegant armour dress with her red short hair. Her look described boldness and elegance. I want to give everyone a message where women also got power, we can be bold, strong, elegant, or even masculine. Because of that, I named this winter collection as "touch of Arcene" where Arcene itself means "silvery" in French. Arcene is also usually used as a name for women. So “touch of Arcene” can be interpreted as “touch of silvery in women”.

E. DESIGN CONSTRUCTIONS

For design constructions, I used the photomontage technique. Photomontage is a process of composing photographs by cutting, gluing, rearranging and overlapping two or more photographs into a new image. I arranged my texture samples on dummy and took photographs. After that, i started to develop my 10 initial ideas. Below are the initial ideas development that i have design.

After consulting with Mr. JR, finally i decided to choose 2 looks for my collection. The two looks that i have chosen were finalized into final drawings. Below are my final designs for both looks. I decided to make both looks for female, as my conceptual story related with women power.

For the first look, I decided to make a mini tube dress, with net to make the dress bigger and puffy. I wanted to make this dress look cute, but also elegant at the same time, so I chose black color as the base fabric and the silver color from the pull tabs.

For the second look, I decided to make a mini dress with a cut off on the waist side and I also added a long mesh to complete the look. This look gives off a bold and elegant vibes, which is related to the conceptual story.

F. TECHNICAL DRAWING

Technical drawings are very important in the fashion design process. It shows the pattern cutter shape of the garment when laid flat. The technical drawing allows you to keep design lines and details in real size as the drawings are presented with correct body proportions. With the help of Mr. Riza, I finally completed my technical drawings and continued to the garment making.

For the first design, I designed a symmetrical tube dress. I seperated the front part into four sections for the upper part of the dress. But for the lower part of the dress, i made it into 3 sections because the middle part is in fold. While for the front part, I seperated it into 4 parts for the upper dress as well as the lower.

For the second design, it is a asymmetrical dress, so i need to measure every part of the front parts and back parts to make sure it combines perfectly when i sew it together, especially the cut off part on the right side of the waist. I seperated the dress into 4 sections for the front and back part.
